SONG OF THE DAY: “I don’t want to be”
ARTIST: Gavin DeGraw
ALBUM: Chariot [Stripped]
YEAR: 2003

I don’t have to be anyone other than the birth of two souls in one.
Part of where I’m going is knowing where I’m coming from.

I don’t wanna be anything other than what I’ve been tryin’ to be lately,
All I have to do is think of me and have peace of mind,
I’m tired of looking ‘round rooms wonder what I gotta do,
Or who I’m supposed to be,
I don’t wanna be anything other than me,

I find this to be complete and utter bullshit. At least the way it’s presented on the show. Peyton talks about lyric people as people who appreciate real music, who really know music and see the true behind that; while music people are just shallow listeners, people who only feel the beat and don’t pay attention to the meaning of the song and its spirit. And that is complete bullshit. I remember getting incredibly mad the first time I saw that scene. Songs are not just lyrics, songs are not just rhythm, songs are not just melody. Simplifying music that way is bullshit. Sometimes a song can give you so many feelings just listening to the lyrics and sometimes a song can give you even more feelings if you pay attention to the melody, the groove and the instruments. I don’t share the way Peyton simplifies music with this concept. And actually, I think it’s really, really out of character.
