Mini-rant:
I hate, *HATE*, this scene and the “you weren’t there when I needed you” scene.
1) Castiel, get off your high-fucking-horse. You deliberately did not go to Dean because, in an act of I can make your decisions better than you, *you* decided that Dean should not be dragged back into the hunting life, and that clearly the best life decision would be to take advice from a demon so you wouldn’t have to tell Dean how you’re sort of cocking it all up.
2) I don’t care how close someone is. I don’t care if they’re family, if they’re my spouse, if they’re my best friend since I was toilet-trained, if they’ve literally saved my life every other year. If you tell me to do something horrible, to “have faith in you”, as you do something that I find completely and morally reprehensible, I will tell you no. In fact, I honestly believe that the truest thing you can do for someone about to fuck up so badly is to hold steady on your refusal and do everything in your power to sway them from their course.
And Cas? Throwing all of this in Dean’s face as blatant emotional manipulation is not cool, and I expect better of you.
STOP THIS TRAIN FOR A SECOND
Castiel is emotionally manipulative. Castiel is EMOTIONALLY MANIPULATIVE?!?!
I literally cannot wrap my head around this. Are you kidding me? Have people completely forgotten seasons 4-5?
What did Dean do in 4x17? “If you don’t help me with this, and the time comes and you expect my help, don’t come knocking.”
What did Dean do in 4x22?” “You spineless, soulless son of a bitch. We’re done. We’re done.”
Dean constantly throws their friendship in Castiel’s face as something he will take away when Cas doesn’t do what he wants.
And even if one wants to make the argument that Cas was “emotionally manipulative,” who the FUCK does he have to take his cues from??? DEAN. DEAN. DEAN. Who as much as I love him—doesn’t always react in the most rational way.
And what exactly is this morally reprehensible thing that Cas was doing? Working with a demon? Well, both Winchesters have done that. And with the same demon. Opening up purgatory? The fact is that neither of them knew what would happen should it be opened. Cas hoped that it would grant him the power to kill Raphael. Dean just insisted on the basis of the premise that it was wrong. And even if Cas was wrong to do so, as we’ve seen with the unleashing of whatever was in there, how is it a morally reprehensible action? He had good intentions, much like Sam did in S4 with his demon blood addiction.
The fact is that neither Dean or Sam could provide Castiel with a viable option. He had to KILL Raphael or everything the THREE of them had sacrificed would have meant nothing. Is there some magical archangel-killing weapon that the boys know about? They never managed to KILL Michael or Lucifer—just shoved them into the cage.
And may I just add with the “Castiel get off your high horse and don’t make decisions for other people” part—What exactly was it that Dean did to Lisa and Ben in 6x21? He had Cas take away their memories WITHOUT THEIR CONSENT. Didn’t he basically make a decision for them there? For such a supporter of free will, Dean certainly didn’t seem to care at all there. And yes, he did do it to PROTECT THEM. But isn’t that exactly what Cas was doing for Dean and Sam? Keeping them out of the fray in order to make sure that they were SAFE?
The thing is, when someone you love, someone who is a part of your family is going down a shady path—completely CUTTING TIES WITH THEM does NOT SOLVE THE PROBLEM. Whether you are talking about fiction or reality, you just end up isolating them more and make them more committed to pursuing what they were before. Cas came to Dean in this scene in order to appeal to him. And instead of Dean taking the opportunity to try and talk to Cas about what was going on, and saying “hey man, there must be SOMETHING ELSE WE CAN DO. I know we worked with Crowley too, but I don’t trust him. And popping open purgatory will make things worse, etc” he completely shut him down and said “I CAN’T CAS, I JUST CAN’T.”
Sigh, and I really should just let this go. I don’t blame Dean. I don’t blame Sam. and I don’t blame Cas. You know why? Because all of the characters in Season 6 were written SO SO SO badly. This was not our Dean. This was not our Sam. This was not our Cas. Everyone was OOC. I’m just so tired of people using the shitty writing to try and justify their hate for a character. Blame the writers who wrote them. Blame them for shoving the characters into a storyline, rather than allowing the characters to shape the plot.
