Clint: Hey, Carol…
Carol: What the hell was that, Barton?
Clint: Exactly what it looked like.
Carol: You’re just— that’s just going to antagonize him.
Clint: I’m going to knock him off his game. Make him slip up. Because you know and I know he will slip up. And the faster he does, the faster we can get everything back to the way it should be.
Carol: You should have run this by us. We’re a team.
Clint: Would you have let me?
Carol: No. Not even a little.
Clint: That’s why I didn’t run it by you. This isn’t forever, you know. He’ll @#$% up. Bad.
Clint: He will. Watch.
So, I heard you like Carol Danvers?
In honor of this weekend’s amazing tumblr-based, fan-run #carolcon, here’s one of my favorite Clint Barton and Carol Danvers friendship moments.
Dark Reign was a mixed bag in a lot of ways, particularly for the New Avengers and doubly so for Clint. Being Ronin, dealing with his own death, dealing with Steve’s death, dealing with Bobbi’s return… Clint wasn’t in the best headspace. A lot of the actions he took contradicted lines he’d previously drawn for himself, or went against his own experiences. He fixated on Norman Osborn, and the results of that were disastrous. One of his earlier strategies was going on television, unmasking, and yelling a lot. That’s what Carol’s calling him out for, here.
Clint and Carol have been on several teams throughout the years, including a few lineups in the 80’s and the initial volume 3 team. Carol, being a big player during House of M and Secret Invasion, was witness to a lot of the circumstances surrounding Clint’s death. But it’s in this New Avengers era that the two of them really reestablished their friendship. They both have taken on leadership roles on various Avengers teams, but their styles are almost entirely different. Carol’s a military strategist; Clint is a lancer who tries to goad people into action. But they recognize each other’s strengths and can work well together.
Carol’s right, in this situation. Nothing Clint does helps much at all. But the two of them are veteran Avengers on a team labeled “New,” and they have that core of experience to draw on. It’s nice to see them offering each other support, even though Clint’s actions are going to backfire very quickly.
Moral of the story? Always listen to Carol. And always run things by her, first.
