To date, Halle Berry is the only black actress to have won an Oscar in the Best Actress in a Leading Role category. Berry won in 2002 for Monster’s Ball. Gabourey Sidibe, Viola Davis, and Quvenzhane Wallis were each nominated in 2009, 2011, and 2012, respectively, but lost out.  Denzel Washington became the second black actor to win an Oscar in the Best Actor in a Leading Role category when he won for Training Day. He’s been nominated three other times in the category, in 1992 for Malcolm X, 1999 for The Hurricane, and in 2012 for Flight.
